List Of Files On Disks And Folders.

I have many USB disks, used for backups, transfers, etc. but I don't know of a good way of cataloguing them.

I would like to produce text files such as...

USB1-Drive-List.txt (containing the following lines)

Root

Instal1.exe
Instal1.bmp
file1.file

Folder - Level1 - \Music
===============

Sergeant_pepper.wma
Revolver_.wma

Folder - Level 2 - \Music\Beatles
====================

Folder - Level 3 - White_album
===================

Obla di Obla da
Octopusses Garden

Folder - Level 1 - \Backups
=================

Folder - Level 2 - \Backups\Docs
====================

Doc1.docx
Doc2.docx

Folder - Level 3 - \Backup\XL
==================

Spread1.xls
Spread2.xls


...I'm sure you get the idea!

I could then keep this text file in a safe place, and so if I ever had an irrecoverable USB drive failure, I'd know exactly how to recreate it. At the moment I have only a rough idea of what is on each drive, and it would be great to be able to index them.

Of course, I've just realised that as well as filename and file type, I'd need file create and modified date for each file.

Is there a Windows way to do this, or if not, is there any software that I could use to do what I need?

Any text Editor could do that for you. Windows offer Notepad. There are others out there. I have Textpad but did pay for it ages ago. I've used Notepad++ too.

Personally I'd be tempted to use a spreadsheet as I could have a named page for each directory/folder: but of course there are "many ways to skin a cat".

Thanks Methyl, I did know the DOS method but I thought that it would have been superseded by now, especially since Microsort seem to be phasing out the DOS prompt.

I downloaded "Cathy" and I'm still trying to make sense of it! Seems at first glance to be rather complicated and a lot more than I really need. Still I'll persevere and report back.

Thanks for all help! Seems such an obvious need that I'm surprised it's not inbuilt in Windows!
