I have a Nokia which I pay by direct debit / standing order, not sure which, but its the same every month and I have unlimited calls. I would like to upgrade to one with apps. Will it cost a lot?

When you say apps I assume you mean a phone that can connect to the internet (and download apps).

Does your current phone have the ability to connect to the internet or will you need a new phone?

I assume you are already paying for a certain number of calls and texts, so you will now need to add a certain amount of "data" to enable you to download apps.

So you need to talk to your telephone supplier and see how much it would cost to add "data" to your contract, and also if you need a new phone or not.

It should not cost too much to add "data" to an existing phone contract.

However if you need a new phone with extra internet capabilities you will either have to buy the phone outright yourself, or get a "free" phone but the monthly cost of your contract will need to go up (to cover the cost of your free phone).

Note you don't need to pay a lot to have a contract that covers calls, texts and data.

I am with T Mobile (now called EE) and I only pay about £9 a month and that covers calls, texts and data.

I did not get a free phone, but I only paid £79 to get a Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini from them that is fine for my needs.

Note that phone companies often offer deals saying things like "£30 a month and a free phone" but over a 2 year life of a phone contract that is going to cost about £720.

It is best to try to get a low priced monthly contract (you can get some monthly contracts at less than £10 a month) and then buy the phone yourself (you can get a Samsung Galaxy S3 mini for about £100).

So a £10 monthly contract, plus say £100 for a phone, is only going to cost you about £340 over 2 years.

So don't always go for the "free phone" offer from these companies as they are often not a good deal, particularly if you are paying for "free" calls and texts and data you are never going to need or use.

agree with VHG on all he says, but my partner had PAYG for years using about £12-£15 per month which seemed quite cheap and then 2 years ago updated to her first smart (internet) phone, unlimited everything £7.50 per month (Samsung Galaxy Y on orange) very basic smart phone with not much memory but good enough for starters. dont know how they do it for that price.

I pay £9.00 PM for 12 months ( D/D) for Sim only & bought my Samsung Galaxy Fame Android Smart phone for £ 69.00 though O2 Phone shop.Covers Emails & everything I need.

Lyn, you don't say who your phone service provider is, that makes the difference. We're we O2, we have everything we need on our monthly contract with them.
