 why are my music tapes being eaten up ? they were ok earlier in the day.I have damaged 3 , even the cleaning head.C anne

If they have gone downhill that quickly I'd guess they have been exposed to a magnetic force (such as putting them too near hi-fi speakers or something).

Tapes do deterioate after time, but I'm talking a few years, not hours!

My stereo did the same recently. Cassette player mangled loads of tapes. I just replaced the player, It's cheaper than repairing it. Sorry I couldn't help more

try and clean the rubber wheel you can see with a cotton bud and a drop of meths

press play and run the soaked cotton bud down the other side of the rubber wheel  and see the dirt come off
