Are there any websites known to veteran ABers that offer free downloads of Beethoven stuff?

not specifically, but guess your usual peer-to-peer serivices such as winmx or shareaza would have a fair amount of Beethoven to offer.

Not sure how the copyright laws come into effect. Guess someone somewhere must own the copyright for his music. (As Booldawg ISN'T condoning the illegal downloading of music ;-)

The bbc offered free downloads of all his symphonies a couple of months ago. Dunno if it's still available. Have a look on the Radio 3 website. They had some phenomenal number of downloads - over 1 million, I think.
