I've never owned my own G-String however I have taken a few off (broken strings on a guitar...)

I have a vintage Caro stop-watch that was missing a spring which is an integral part of the mechanism that resets the hands to zero. So I went to the local music store and bought a 0.51mm guitar spring instead of spending a lot of money at a clock/watch supply house. It works just fine, and doesn't even need to be tuned up:)
