I want to get into film making at home, and need to get a new camera. I think I need one of those types with a boom mic on top, that extends forwards, since camcorder in-built mics tend to pick up a lot of sounds from behind.

Does anyone know what sort of camera I should get, and what they cost?

THANKS!

As long as the camera has an external mic socket (some of the cheaper ones don't) you can buy a mic that suits you. Do a search on the Internet and look at the specifications of the camera or, better still, spend a fiver on a video camera magazine and save yourself some money in the long run. A friend of mine does wedding videos and swears (!) by Canon cameras and Sennheiser microphones.
