Safely Remove Hardware Icon.

Yesterday I used a memory sick in my computer and usually before I take it out of my computer, I click on an icon in the R/H lower menu tray which tells me when it is safe to remove the stick, but for some reason the icon was missing, yet today it has returned.

Can anyone tell me the reason for this, and how I can stop it from happening again?

I think its a bit of a relic with modern sticks etc - you can remove them anytime the connection is not in use without any problems
