If you are speaking of expansion cards then there is no difference in the terms.

Technically this type of hardware comes under the heading Network Interface Adapter, which includes, among others, external devices which may attach to a PC via a USB port, ports mounted directly on the motherboard and internal expansion cards which are commonly known as Network Interface Cards (NIC).
