It amuses me that many people who use forums believe that all the other users are like minded and similar to them.
The Streetlife forum that I am a member of is a good example. Someone has just posted a rant against Muslims using the most vile terms seemingly ignorant of the fact that many members are Muslim.
I hope nothing comes of it as this member is quite high profile in a local sort of way and lots of people know where she lives.
I see it here, too, to a lesser degree. It seems some people assume because they have a common interest such as using Answerbank all the other users must be of the same background and beliefs as them.

I am amazed at medical forums:
Thyroid Society members soon become Endocrinologists, Diabetes Society members become Consultants in Diabetes.........
They also perform a function for those who are invalided and can't get out....it keeps them mentally active and amused.
i am only on AB and that is enough for me......too much at times.

woofgang, you must have seen posts that attack one section of society as if they are in a private members' club.
I take Streetlife seriously, lots of useful local information from the council, police, councillors and of course residents.
As for AnswerBank I take some posts seriously and others I can happily ignore or have a good laugh at.

I joined a Streetlife forum relating to memories of the place where I was born and brought up and married from. Now it is a multicultural place that bears no relation whatsoever to the lovely place it used to be. The older residents have posted remarks and old photos about the things we used to do and we have had a good time reminiscing of the places and people we used to know. The occasional Muslim/Indian/Asian resident has joined in, saying that they never knew that it was like that. I felt a bit indignant that one mentioned it being his 'manor'. Somebody replied that it used to be ours and they could share our memories if they wish, but the place is not a patch on what it was because of the different cultures there now, some older people still resent that. I have no thought of people on AB sharing anything with me, we agree and disagree and fall out over some things, but we still have an interest here.
