I am a 78-year old Luddite. I have spent two days trying to get Windows 7 Automatic Updates to work, because whenever I shut down my laptop it tells me it is installing 17 updates. I have tried all the suggestions, but still have the problem. Please can anyone make an old man happy?
Many thanks

What makes you think it's not working? You don't say in your post.
Oh, just realised you say it keeps installing the same 17 updates is that right? What happens when you restart your laptop, because Windows finishes off the install when you restart.
Have you adjusted the settings in Windows Update?

I do not check the updates each time I switch on my computer - maybe I will next time, then I can let you know!
I have checked and rechecked my settings, followed all the suggestions from Microsoft on the Internet forums including installing software that is supposed to solve the problem.
I have no idea if it is the same updates every time - it doesn't really matter if they are not being installed, does it?
What I'm getting at is how do you know they are not being installed?
leave your comp running over night you might be switching it off before its finished updating,

Windows 7 switches itself off when it has finished processing the updates, BUT you made me think of something else. You should always have your laptop plugged in to the mains when it's processing updates, because if it runs out of juice before it's finished then........problems a plenty!
