Its no surprise to me, whatsoever, that yet another person in a position of some importance in society was not investigated properly at the time. The great and the good look after their own it would seem.

....But she added: "I should make it clear that it is impossible to say whether those letters were encouraged and it is unlikely that those who wrote were in possession of the full facts."
I saw something about a letter bearing the name of Prince Charles but that was only because the house involved was on land belonging to Duchy of Cornwall or something similar
I think we need more info really.
I bet people had written letters of support in the past about Savile, Rolf Harris, etc when they didn't have all the facts

If someone has a position of authority and trust, it is very hard for people around them to accept that they have a dark side, and would betray that trust, especially in this case – a man of God and a pillar of the community.
But of course, people do have a dark side, and this man’s is pitch black, and his ignominy is only furthered by the fact that so many people in high society believed in him and trusted him, when of course he was as guilty as sin.
Not a problem for an atheist like me – he is just one more man who wore a funny hat and used his position to get what he wanted, but for people of faith, they must feel very let down – again.

In the case of Savile the then PM, Margaret Thatcher, personally was responsible for his being granted the title of 'Director of Fundraising' for Stoke Manderville hospital.
Savile suggested the idea to her ( he apparently had her private direct line phone number) and she was happy to arrange it.
This title, though unpaid, carried the same privileges as a full director, making him 'untouchable'. It was only after becoming a director that he was able to use his position to assault patients on such a huge scale without being found out. Until then he had to be careful not to be caught out and was forced to restrict his activities.

Eddie .....Savile, the serial abuser, used to spend time at Chequers ......so he was able to fool people from the top down.
I have a nightmare that goes something like this ::::
Maggie ..." Oh do have another brandy, Jimmy...please do ! "
Savile...."Well...if you insist ...after all the taxpayer is paying Maggie ! "
Maggie....." Oh you are awful !...pour him another brandy Dennis ! "
