BT's budget arm, Plusnet, generally gets good reviews:

We've just changed to SSE. Highly satisfied so far - apart from getting away from BT (they cling). Very good package, phone and broadband same as BT plus free phone calls (within a reasonable limit) to one foreign destination and all the time in UK. BT was only free weekends and evenings. Also half the price. :) They were very, very helpful and sorted everything out.
Just don't choose Talktalk, whatever you do ( for obvious reasons ! )

Seem to recall you were not happy with BT recently either.!!
Retrocop... very true !

But it was the first time it had let me down in nearly 20 years. As has been explained on AB many times before, if its a line problem, as mine was, then BT, in the form of Openreach, is going to be involved in the provision of any Broadband service and the fixing thereof, if it goes faulty. If you get your Broadband from your telephone line, as almost all of us still do, BT is the only game in town.

Thanks for your replies. BC I'm surprised that you said PLusnet as they don't get very good reviews
Plusnet is a Which? Recommended Provider for phone/broadband...and you don't get much better than that. I'm with John Lewis and the service is provided by Plusnet...no problems at all.
