Once you have this software, select Xbox games can be played, although there isn't a definitve list at present as to which games will and won't work (although Halo is a sure bet.)
In short, you can play Xbox games on an Xbox 360 if you buy the more expensive one with the hard drive.
Microsoft have changed some of the internal hardware on the Xbox360, such as the graphics card.

microsoft are currently producing an emulator software for the 360 to play old games, they claim that most old games will work happily but they may be ones yet to be tried and tested that wont, this is because the new chips and proccessors are totally different to the original Xbox and thus proccess info differently, any games that dont work and microsoft consider worth upgrading will have a patch to download from their Xbox Live2.0 service. This service is free for all on the silver service for downloading patches, some content and demos, and uploading your scores on your profile, to play games online u will need the subscription Gold service that will cost 39.99 a year (various offers on this price from different retailers/wont need a credit card this time)
The Xbox 360 goes on sale in Britain 2nd December 2005 and will be on sale at 279.99 for the fully equipped version and a lesser equipped one that isnt ideal for anyone wanting to play online for 209.99 as it doesnt come with the hardrive and various other attachements.
