Bill Gates's software seems to have a habit of changing settings for no apparent reason, so it could be your Security settings. Go to Tools / Internet Options / Security and (temporarily) drop your security settings to the absolute minimum. Then try loading the pages again. If this works, put the security settings back to a more sensible level and try once more.
Another program which might have changed its settings is your firewall. Try completely disabling it (temporarily, of course) to see if you can access the required pages. If this solves your problem, you'll still have to turn your firewall back on (for obvious reasons) but at least you'll know where to look for a solution (i.e. in your firewall settings).
Just a thought: While you're trying these experiments, try something like your Google groups rather than Hotmail. This is because Hotmail can be a real pain to get into - even from a perfectly configured system! (I gave up on Hotmail, years ago, for that very reason!).
Good luck!
