had a message earlier saying iphone needed to update software and 11 apps will be deleted while updating then reinstalled when finished, this was several hours ago, those apps are now dark and they have waiting by them. does anyone know how long it takes or what to do next? I've never seen this before

Is your phone plugged into the charger?

Go to settings/general/software update to check whether the OS software update has been completed or is just downloaded and waiting to install
