Orlando Car Hire
About to book a Florida holiday for next year with Virgin. Their fly drive package includes basic insurance which gives you up to 30k liability. The full option is another £323 and has other extra add ons which I'm not sure if they are needed. Is the basic cover enough or will there be extras to pay on arrival? Or will it be better value to arrange car hire separately? Have checked out a few companies which are cheaper but it's unclear if there is extra taxes etc to pay on their prices. Confused!

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.We learned our lesson with cheap car hire companies last September when we hired a car in Croatia. Never use a cheapo firm again .... Anyway, we also have a separate policy with a company called "Insurance4Carhire" (or something like that) so when we hire a car abroad (or here for that matter), we don't have to pay any extra to what we have already paid. It's saved us quite a few pennies over the few years we've taken this out. Well worth checking out. Chox.
Hi again tigwig
We always use Alamo when in the States or Canada.....we find them to be excellent value for money and all the extra's inclusive of the rental charge.....CDW or collision damage waiver is all you need, no excess, and €1 million liability....they upgraded us free of charge this year to a 12 seater Ford people carrier...2 months old and lovely to drive..it was massive and helped so much for room and getting all luggage in, to and from the airport
Just a suggestion so see what type of car you would like and what is quoted.
Best of luck x

as chokkie says, you could consider taking out insurance before you leave home. One apparently satisfied customer here:

1 additional driver is, at the moment, being offered as free of charge, which is a bonus if you have someone to share driving with. We drove to Tampa to go to Busch Gardens Park..Mrs B drove there, and I drove back .......we did the same for Kennedy Space Center, and Miami, which is quite a drive.
One thing, tigwig.......I would recommend when you book the car to add a Sat Nav to the booking....they are not normally inclusive, unless built-in, as they are a must and makes sure you never get lost.
Enjoy, tiggy x

Thank you :) We are really looking forward to it, just hope we get through immigration!!! Yes we will share the driving and that is the 1 thing that Virgin don't offer on the basic package but I thought the next package was a bit steep? I think I will look at car hire separately. Thanks again everyone.
There's another thread on it! Basically my husband has a drink driving conviction so has a visa. Problem is its in an expired passport that I've thrown away and im not even sure if it will be valid when we travel. Last time we were in Florida immigration asked what the visa was for and laughed when we told them. Said he didn't need it. So he will travel on esta but I have nightmares thinking they will stop him because it will be flagged up that he had a visa and hasn't renewed it.
we've always used

to book car hire in Orlando. Found they always had the best rates and its clear to see what insurance is provided / extra. They also sometimes have promos from the likes of Budget - e.g. free extra driver and are usually cheaper than going to the big boys direct.
