For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.It is normally down to three factors
1) How far you are away from the exchange, lines are not straight as the crow flies.
2) What speed you have got e.g 2mb or 512kb
3) Contention on the exchange (no. of people sharing)
If you are near to the exchange you will have no problem getting 8mb downloads and no dropped line. If you are on the edge of the maximum distance, you will have problems getting 512kb and might have to go to 256k. If BT give you 512kb and you are at the edge, you can find it drops the line regularly. It might be worth getting BT to up the gain on the line. Also you probably find that it drops the line more regularly at peak times i.e weekends and 6-10pm during the week due to everybody trying to use the exchange(contention).
This has happened only in the last 3-4 weeks, where a lot of people are finding the same problem. The exchange ( for me ) is over the road, I have a 2 MB line.
The connection has been spot on and permenantly connected for over 3 years, no problem whatsoever. Just the last 3 weeks or so, its continually dropping, whether Idle or not.
I think BT have a problem, I am just waiting for them to own up to it and state how they are going to solve it.
Thanks PodgeMaster
It can drop at any time of day,
The router complains about an LCP Synchronisation - too many errors, timeout.
It actually states that its still connected, showing speeds, but on another part of the modem it says connection terminated or No Sync
I am a Network Analyst and after going through changing filters, modems, removing phones etc, everything that you would think of, It make no difference, In fact its getting worse.
Its not just me, Many people ( using ADSL ) have started complaining about this, from different Service Providers.
Here might be the explanation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This kind of activity can cause all sorts of electromagnetic interferance.
