Perodically, when I use my pc mouse, the cursor arrow "breaks up" and a black rectangle takes the place of the cursor mouse.
I then have to reboot my PC (Widows XP) and then everything is normal for a while before the same thing happens again... anybody got any ideas on how to eliminate this "nag" ?
I have went into the Control Panel properties for the Mouse but no joy.
Hi Folks it is not a wheeled mouse and what is a "resource issue" ? and my Windows XP pc is used exclusively for a photo-editing prog. which will not run on any other operating system. I also have Windows 7 Laptop. Thanks for all you help but this problem still persists and is annoying... J.Boy
I can sympathise with you wanting to stay with XP - I lost a perfectly good printer when I upgraded to Vista (due to lack of drivers) and also had to upgrade my video editing software.
Perhaps it's worth trying a different mouse. Have a look at one of these:

We use them on our laptops and I reckon it's worth spending £10 to see if it cures the problem.
Togo's reply is well worth trying - with one of our mice the cursor jumps to the top of the screen when the battery is low, with others the mouse just stops working. His suggestion is even cheaper than mine.
