I had an answer from Ralph, which was a good one, he told me to go to a site, however the problem I have, I cant even get onto my desktop, i get to the windows xp logo, then it just goes blank, after the message appears( which was in my last post).  Is there a way I can get into my desktop to access the start button to carry oout the instructions from the site you suggest Ralph.   thanks to everyone who answered

i had a similar prob on my pc a couple of weeks back, i solved it by booting from the XP install disk and then choosing last know good settings in the startup menu, u cant get it by pressing one of the f keys during startup
theren_911's advice is good, though I don't think you need the install disc just yet. If you hold down the F8 key just before Windows boots, you get a menu where you can choose various boot options. Choose the "Last Known Good Configuration" option. If it boots up properly, install the patches listed on the last post, update your virus scanner and make sure your firewall is working properly. Download & run the Stinger tool from http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ which should help sort out almost any modern worm.

If it is Sasser, it might be very very difficult to remove. If you get access to the disk, try and back up all your stuff. As a last resort, a hard disk format and reinstall might be necessary, but let us know what happens first, before you take that rather drastic action!
