I'm looking to buy a record player as a gift for someone

I don't know enough about them to understand what kind of model to get

I just want a reasonably priced model they would play a standard LP ( I quite like those briefcase portable models) but I don't really know what I should be looking out for and what 35 RPM and 45 rpm means ....

Revolutions per minute.
( It's a measure of how unstable a nation is. )
Old-fashioned singles were played at 45 revolutions per minute. Albums were at 33 1/3.
I'm sorry I can't help you with the model of record player you want to buy, but anything with those two settings will play the records your friend has, assuming he/she is about my age and doesn't have gramophone records.
The dropping of 78 was a mistake. Many of us have records that run on that. Never has any 16⅔ ones though.

BTW it's 33⅓ not 35, unless there is a further speed I'm unaware of.
and if you did "drop "a 78 the record is no more lol
