Many thanks. Never heard the expression!! Almost got it but didn't know "trace"
I don't get the definition.
Jackdaw - from the link above, "The phrase 'tace is Latin for a candle', meaning 'keep it quiet'..." - so, a "request for peace"
I have never come across that saying in all my sixty-odd years.
It dates a little earlier than that JD.

Nicked this from elsewhere...

//It was used by Jonathan Swift in A Complete Collection of Genteel and Ingenious Conversation, published in 1738 but composed in the first decade of the 18th century:

- Lady Smart: "Well, but, after all, Tom, can you tell me what’s Latin for a Goose?"

- Mr Neverout:" O my Lord, I know that; why Brandy is Latin for a Goose, and Tace is Latin for a Candle".//
Fork handle?
Behave you or you'll write out 10 Chapters of A Complete Collection of Genteel and Ingenious Conversation, in detention.
Seemingly the phrase is used with or without the 'a', so it would sound like Tace is Latin fork handle! Nice one, Shoota.
I still don't see what candles have to do with silence, Two Ronnies or no Two Ronnies. I guess one needed to have taken Latin at school.
I DID study Latin ( and was quite good at it) but I still couldn't work out the anagram. Tough one that! Good crossword though. I have got my percentage success rate up to about 80% so I feel I am making good progress ( with help from you people!!)

Half term! ( or Reading week as they call it here but with no list of things to read!) I was even allowed a lie in as it's the Bank Holiday. Bliss.
I would never have got the "tace is Latin..." clue even though I too studied Latin. I thought the clue " impress hosts by becoming wayward" was a brilliant clue. Did others?
One part of an answer I don't get. " requirement for computer access is good and clear". The answer is obviously " user ID". The definition is straighforward and I can see that clear might be rid. But how do " good" in the clue and " use" in the answer fit please?
Miserable weather means no gardening or the likes. So it's not all bad.
Btw thank you Mamyalynne for what you said about continuing to call her SWMBO. Not sure, but I am grateful to you for your thoughts. As ever!

Good = Use

as in

What use/good is this?
Your choice Steven but am sure Mum would see the comical side.

Glorious day here in Lancashire.
Good being the same as use seems a bit of a stretch to me, even with your example. Still...
I am glad the weather is good in Lancashire. You don't get much!
She wouldn't be amused if I called her Mum. The only thing she hates more is Mom.
Steven
I'll have you know we get at least three days of sun per year in Lancs.

Mom is not good, I agree.

Good

Noun.

2

benefit or advantage to someone or something.
"he convinces his father to use his genius for the good of mankind"
synonyms: benefit, advantage, profit, gain, interest, welfare, well-being, enjoyment, satisfaction, comfort, ease, convenience; help, aid, assistance, use, usefulness, avail, service, behalf
OK, I surrender. The weather here is perfect for reading week. No temptation to go out.
So, you are biased against " mom" too. Is it because it's American?
Glad you have the good weather.

Yes 'Mom' is way too American for my ears - always been Mum to mine .

The occasional 'Mummy Woo' alerts me a big favour is about to be asked, but we know the signs and cope.
Oh sorry, learn to read properly Lynne - you have indoor reading weather.

Ah well, save the sunshine for later in the year for you I hope.
Yes it's "stay in to read" weather. More of it today. But I AM doing the work so it's OK. Just having a tea break.
But I hope the weather improves for the weekend. Summer has started hasn't it?
I am still really puzzled by this saying " tace is Latin for a candle" I have tried saying tace to sound like tacky which one of my Latin teachers would do. And as if the c sounded like ch as the priest in my church would say it but it still doesn't make any sense. Really odd!
