Help Re A Locked, Needing A Puk Number For My Htc Desire Phone

Hi there, me again, technology is being a pain at the moment. Have just had delivered a new mobile phone, a HTC Desire. Setting it all up and personalising it as you do, when it came up, SET UP A PIN NUMBER FOR YOUR SIM CARD, okay I thought, put 4 numbers in and then another page came up and said NOW PUT IN YOUR PUK NUMBER, eh!!! you what, what on earth is one of them, anyway had a go and now only got 3 more chances left. Please can anyone help me as I now have a £200 useless phone that will not let me get of certain page. Have tried rebooting, back to factory settings etc. so I guess it now has something to do with my SIM CARD. Do I need to get a new SIM or is there another way of sorting it. I thank you now very much if anyone out there can help me. xx

Do you think they would be able to give me a PUK number if I rang them, I am a pay as you go also
