Been thinking about getting an Avatar.
When I click through from AB, it takes me to WordPress.com

Will I end up being bombarded with loads of crappy emails if I sign up?
How much information will they want? I’m happy to give my email address, but not much more than that.

Why can’t we just use a picture without having to sign up?

Thanks.

I have never had any that seem to come from WordPress although we never know where some of the spam might have come from I suppose
What the heck is WordPress ?
Are you sure you don't have a PC infection ?

i thought i did?
I thought you had to use Gravatar to get an avatar on here, you do have to sign up with the same e-mail address you use for AB but I've never had an e-mail from them. what's Wordpress?
It's been a long time since I got a gravitar account for this place.

It looks like you can sign up from wordpress if you have an account with them but I'm fairly sure that's just an option. Go sign up with gravitar directly.

From AB FAQs:

Please see the below article for information on how to upload an avatar:

http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/AB-Editors-Blog/article/what-is-an-avatar/

which takes me to this

Gravatar is the service that The AnswerBank uses to display avatar images across the site. You need to sign up to Gravatar (found here http://en.gravatar.com/site/signup/) with the SAME email address that you signed up to The AnswerBank with and have just found from your profile page.

clicking the link gives me

Sign in to Gravatar with WordPress.com Connect
Gravatar now allows you to use a WordPress.com account to sign in. If you have a WordPress.com account already then you can use that, or you can create a new one.
Yes, Gravatar uses Wordpress now
I have never had any emails from wordpress or gravatar.

You don't get ant grief from them at all, just do it.
I don't see any reason to have a single avatar over multiple sites anyway. Just forces folk to keep on opening up more e-mail addresses. Daft idea. Ok as an option maybe.

But we're stuck with it. Gravatar hasn't been an e-mail botherer so far, one assumes now they let WordPress do their webpages, and tell everyone that they are signing up with WordPress, that this hands off approach will continue the same.
nobody has to have an avatar here or anywhere else.
