Can calls be unblocked? Maybe that's happened? Also no dialling tones
I'm lost. Are you trying to enter a number into the phone's memory or are you trying to block a number? Importantly, have you got 'caller display' enabled on your phone line? (It's essential for the phone's call-blocking functions).
Question Author
Were lost too Chico!
How do you unblock blocked numbers please.
^^^ Crossed posts.

The 'no dialling tone' bit is rather worrying. How many other phones/devices have you got connected to the line? (Maybe you've exceeded the maximum 'ring equivalence number' for the line?)
I've just bought one. Complicated. To go straight through you have to have your number in the call directory, otherwise you will be asked to announce your name before the call is processed. If you set the call guardian to off all numbers will come through. I'm struggling with mine. If you ever find out how to change the number of rings before the answerphone kicks in let me know, as there is nothing in the booklet.

Hi jackdaw. Glad you find it totally frustrating too!

("To add a number to the allow list"
To unblock see pp23-24 of the manual. This switches call guardian off and all calls come through.

Great advice so far ...but..

We are on virgin, would this be the problem not setting it up correctly!
Silly question maybe, but we're stupid people says Mr P. Lol
Are you paying for "Caller Display" from Virgin Media? It adds £2.25 per month to your bill but your phone can't work properly without it. (That figure is quoted from a third-party website, so it might not be up to date. Virgin Media's own website is down for 'essential maintenance' at the moment).
Question Author
can't thank you enough for trying to help us.
we are reverting back to old phone for now. cheers Chris, Jackdaw x
Yes, caller display is essential.
Question Author
Thanks Chico, you are so very helpful. much appreciated.

You too Jackdaw! Your both brill trying to help us out.
I pay £12 per quarter for BT caller display but it's money well spent. Wouldn't be without it.
If you're finding the BT 8600 too complicated, return it and get this Panasonic phone set-up instead...very similar features, including "one-touch" call-blocking but very easy and intuitive to set-up and use....and a Which? Best Buy also. One of my best purchases in a long time!

In the meantime, follow my instructions above to turn off call guardian. When you are more comfortable with the phone, follow the instructions at the top of page 23 to select which types of call you wish to block. You still haven't said if you have caller display.
Question Author
Have no caller display yet. Mr P still playing around with phones and I,m keeping quiet for a while ...cooking dinner. Cheers muchly everyone x
Need caller display first.
