Problems With Electricity Supply.

Last night, I put the dishwasher on just before I went to bed. An hour later, the electricity was cut off and the switch in the fuse box that relates to the kitchen was down in the 'off' position. Mr T switched off the dishwasher, mid cycle and put the fuse switch back to 'on'.

This morning I switched the dishwasher back on and ten minutes later the same thing happened. I had to keep switching on the fuse switch in order to get the dishwasher cycle finished. I must have visited the fuse box at least eight times before the dishwasher had finished.

I am currently using the oven and the same thing has happened except this time, the whole house switched off, then twenty seconds later the house electricity came back on but not the kitchen electricity. Again, I switched on the 'off' fuse'.

I have turned off all the sockets that I can. Is it safe to just keep switching the fuse box switch on, every time it cuts out? Arrrrrrrrghhhhhh!

Can anyone reassure me that it's ok to keep switching the fuse box switch back to 'on'. Please?

No it's not safe! , the consumer unit ( not fuse box now) is telling you there is a fault in your electrical system.

Well no, circuit breakers trip for a reason (usually) there is a fault somewhere, you need an an electrician

Hi tilly......

It definitely sounds like you have a problem with your kitchen electrical supply and not too good you keep turning on from fuse box......I would call out your Electrician asap to fault find and fix problem. .....maybe electrician here can help with diagnosis. ....but definitely cutting off somewhere. . .worry that it is on dishwasher and now oven......best of luck x

As it is the kitchen that keeps tripping the unit. There is a fault in the kitchen electrics. You can switch off the kitchen circuit and leave the rest of the house on, but DO NOT keep switching the kitchen circuit back on!
Circuit breakers are there for a reason , it is never safe to just keep resetting it!

Thank you all. I know I must have a problem but I needed to get my chicken cooked! I will call an electrician tomorrow.

Any ideas as to why the whole system went off and then came on all by itself? I didn't do anything, I was still scrabbling about for the torch. Could it be the actually electricity supply to the house?

Further if your whole house turned off, try not to use any kitchen equipment tonight and call urgently tomorrow. .....if the tv and other electrical appliances working it could stem from the kitchen .....x

Nope, seriously, get it checked out....you may well have a short in there, the kitchen circuit that is.....any rats or mice or squirrels having a wee snack on you?

You need to check the situation when an issue occurs. Circuit breakers do not turn themselves on so if you believe the electricity went off and then came back on again except for the kitchen, then that is very odd.

One thing you could do is disconnect all appliances in the kitchen and see if the issue goes away. Might be difficult to take the cooker off. Nor the freezer for long. Boiler also. But toasters, kettles, etc., might be causing it. But I see that you say you have turned off all you can so maybe, unless you have missed something, you have done all you reasonably can.

However the advice to call in an electrician is a bit of a 'no brainer'. First thing in the morning then ?

Forget the chicken and go down the chippy or have sandwiches. It is not worth risking a serious fault/fire just to cook a chicken.

Eddie, that chicken was expensive! However, I bow to your experience and advice. First thing tomorrow, I will ring an electrician. Actually, I will ring Homeserve or Homecare, with whom we have an insurance against electrical faults. (I never know which is which)

I can't cope with things going wrong in the house. It really mithers me!

We ate dinner in peace. The oven was off, as was the kettle, the toaster, the washing machine, dishwasher, tumble dryer, radio and table lamp. So far, so good. The dishes can wait until the morning.

OG, that's what happened. The kitchen electrics shut down, I went to the consumer unit to turn it back on and, meanwhile, the whole house shut down. Twenty seconds? later it came back on, but not the kitchen electricity. I thought it was odd too.

Perhaps you blew the sub-station circuit breaker and the technician had to reset it.

Could be that at the same time as the kitchen tripped there was a mini powercut.

Now it all going bonkers! This time it was the kettle that tripped it.
