When I used to use IE, if I had a page that had several tabs open and I went to close it, it would ask me if I wanted to close all tabs or just the current one.
Is there something similar on chrome, as I keep accidentally closing pages that have several tabs open .... and it's getting annoying now??
I've had a look in settings, but can't find anything :(

Not sure if this is what you mean, but if you right-click any tab you should see this - http://media6000.dropshots.com/photos/1334135/20161104/134338.jpg I use "Reopen closed tab" quite a lot ;-)

Yes

Click the Chrome menu top right (three horizontal dashes on top of each other), then settings.

You will see the option on the page that opens

I can navigate to the settings ok - I just can't find anything in there that tells it what to do when I close down a page or tab :(

That doesn't work if you've closed all tabs and Chrome has shut though. I must admit I have chrome and can't see it in settings either. I'd not noticed before. We use bing at work and that certainly asks close all tabs as does IE but my Chrome doesn't.
I've just thought, that ^ *might* depend on what Operating System you're running? Also, do you mean you got the message from IE when you tried to close the window (top-right 'X') with more than one active tab?

Ah cheers for that - I think I also might be using reopen tab, now that I know about it.
It would be nice though, to be prompted before I close the tabs .... I assume there isn't the option like there is in IE ??
Along the top of the page there should be a Grey square to open a new tab. Every time you click on the square you will open a new tab which line up to the left of the grey square. the current tab will be white, the rest grey. To close any tab click on the cross of that tab, to reopen that tab click anywhere on that tab except on the cross, this will now open and the new tab will be highlighted. To close all tabs click on the red cross on the right.

Just realised as well that reopen tab won't work, as it'll close the whole page down.

- that's exactly what I mean. When I close a page using IE, with ore than 1 tab open, it asks me if I want to close all tabs, or just the one I'm on - just in case I'm accidentally closing other tabs by accident .... shame chrome doesn't offer this :(

That's the problem vulcan - I'm accidentally closing pages using the red cross.
When I used IE, it would ask me, so it prevented me from accidentally closing tabs that I was using .......
As far as I know there's no such option in Chrome, you just need to train yourself to close the tabs by clicking on the x on the tab, instead of on the Close Window button. If you have only one tab open, then closing the tab will also close the browser.
I don't use the red cross until I want to close the whole lot down. Sometimes I will have 20 or more tabs open, they just sit in the background. You don't have to close any tabs down to open a new one.

Thanks for all the replies - looks like I shall have to get used to closing tabs separately from now on.
Anyway BA awarded to Lie-in King, as it's something I wasn't aware of and may use in the future :)
If you press Ctrl + H whilst using Chrome, and assuming you're not in incognito mode, it will show your history. You can re-open any tab you like (assuming you haven't cleared your history). In settings, you can also tell Chrome to open where you left off - so if you close the whole window, it will reopen your tabs again when you restart.
