Windows 10 Update Patches Issue

Just wondering if anyone has any general suggestion as to how to overcome an update problem.

It seems that since the start of this month (not aware of any obvious change I made) the updates have tended to fail. Started with KB3197954 (which it has now tried and failed to install 5 times) plus KB3200970 (4 failed attempts).

Yesterday I tried the troubleshooting function and it claimed to have repaired some corruption, but that seems not to have worked. As I write I think that I may try it again. ...

It claims again to find update database corruption, plus other issues found and claimed fixed, but it just fails again when I retry the update.

(I am not sure why it has to download it again every time. I'm paying the broadband and don't want the limit used up. Surely they can sign the file and check it is valid ?)

It was error 0x800705b5 previously, but now it is 0x80073712 and 0x80246007. (Apparently it tried KB3200970 again and KB890830 respectively.)

It seems to have problems downloading, sticking at about 17%, then suddenly decides it has all 100% (which is highly suspicious of being dodgy download coding) and then on install it still fails.

(As an aside Kaspersky has started to note updates for installed programmes and it's failing to install Foxit Reader also.)

Don't know what patches are. All I know is that lately Windows 10 has become almost impossible to use, it was bad enough to start with. Typing this is a window to Heaven -I've not been able to access the site at all. All of a sudden the type size has gone so small as to be almost illegible. If I go onto settings and try to alter the size the needle zips back instanter. I have almost given up. I used to be able to do all sorts of things, now struggling in the stone age. Fed up of it all.

If you are on metered connections, set it as so. W10 is not the issue, it may be your use of it. Some upgrades are halted because of data limitations set by your internet provider. If you let Microsoft know this they will bleed them out to suit your internet provider's limit.

Try this go to windows/softwaredistribution/download folder and delete everything - reboot - then hit search for updates again - try only loading 2 or 3 at a time.

CaC how do you find w10? For me after 8 and all the issues it is grand. Plus it was free. My laptop particularly is so much better. It came with 8 and I hated it.

It's already set to metered to ensure it occurs when I want it to (but it has to be able to actually update though).

I'll try the delete/reboot thing in the morning, thanks.

Sorry to have to report, but the deletion of downloads didn't change anything :-(

There is a general problem with Windows Update. For many issues, the answer is to manually install certain updates using the standalone updater.

I can honestly say that I have not had one problem with updates on either the desktop or laptop.

Can you point me in the direction of an MS stand-alone updater please ?

I dont know if this will be of any help these are isolated reports
Users complaining that KB3200970 fails to install and then restores the previous settings and boots to the desktop. The update is then re-offered, before it fails to install again pushing the system into a loop that can’t be blocked until KB3200970 is hidden or installs successfully.
Malicious Software Removal Tool KB890830 has caused problems with Avast and Norton and they require turning off to install this update

Good info Bert. I do not use any third party malware or bolt on security programmes hence no problems.

for the record I have had no problems with Win 10 - a full install of the Pro version rather than an upgrade. I use Firefox, Norton Security and that thing we arent supposed to mention - and no issues with AB either.
If the update thing didnt work try doing them one at a time and see which one fails then search for that specific solution - I`ve had that on Win 7.

No. Pausing the antivirus protection for the whole period of the download and installation and reboot still failed.

Have you run the System File Checker to check for any damaged system files
Open an elevated command prompt, run the “sfc/scannow” command and try to install the update again.
