mario kart ds wireless play

do you know if you require broadband to play mario kart ds online ? i know nintendo are selling a thingy that connects your ds to your internet service without having to get a wireless router, but i wanted to know if i could play online using my standard dialup service. also, will the uk be able to play on the nintendo wi-fi service on nov 11 which is when mario kart is released ?
