Facebook Notifications.

I'm blundering my way around Facebook at the insistance of my offspring and I'm not sure about 'notifications'. For instance there was the red bubble with the, er, notification that I had a notification if you see what I mean. It was from one of my 'friends'. Now all I want to know is, is that solely for me or does it go to everyone that they are 'friends' with.
