Setting Up Wireless All-In-One Printer
I've just bought an HP Envy 3524 wireless a-i-o printer and set it up with both USB and wireless connections. I've done this both from the HP website and from the installation CD.
The printer works fine from my PC and also wirelessly from my Android smartphone and my wife's ipad.
It also works fine as a photocopier.
However, it steadfastly refuses to scan. When I press the "Scan" icon, it says "No Computer found" and then when I try to follow the instruction to "Open the HP Printer software" from All Programs ¦ HP ¦ HP Envy 4520 Series , apparently I should see "Scanner Actions" and "Manage Scan to Computer" but all I see is "(empty)".
Similarly, if I go via Start ¦ Devices and Printers, although my HP Envy 4524 is shown as the default printer, nothing happens when I press Start Scan.
I have tried re-installing the software but to no avail.
Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong please?

Try completely uninstalling anything to do with the printer, RESTARTING YOUR COMPUTER and then installing from the download:
http:// support .hp.com /us-en/ drivers /selfse rvice/s wdetail s/HP-De skjet-3 520-e-A ll-in-O ne-Prin ter-ser ies/516 2504/mo del/524 1256/sw ItemId/ al-1088 12-4
(The 'restart' reference is in capitals because it's IMPORTANT! If you don't restart a computer between uninstalling and reinstalling software the registry might not get fully updated, meaning that the reinstallation won't work properly).
If you still get stuck, try phoning HP UK Support:

Thanks for your very quick reply Chris. I have uninstalled anything and anything associated with the printer and was just about to install from your link when I realised that my original post contained a rather fundamental typo!
My printer model is actually HP Envy 4524, not 3524. (Why do they have to put 3 and 4 so close together? Don't answer that!).
Sorry to be a pain in the neck, but do you perchance have a similar link for the 4524 from which I can download?
Thanks for your help - and patience.

Thanks again Chris. I have installed from your download link and although a few more things seemed to be happening this time the end result is the same, i.e. I can print and copy as before but still can't scan.
I can feel a phone call to HP Support coming on, on Monday - unless you've any other ideas...

Just another puzzling thing for you Chris:
When I had gone through the installation process, I got a Printer icon on my Desktop. I dragged and dropped this icon into a new folder, along with the other HP Envy associated icons that were on the Desktop. Also I dragged and dropped a pdf file of the User Manual for the printer.
For some reason that I can't fathom, I can now not remove any of these icons - nor can I open the pdf - because I need "permission".
Is this a registry issue?
I suppose I can redownload the user manual and let it live on the Desktop, but I just wonder what I'm doing that I shouldn't be doing!

Well there's definitely something weird going on!
Right-click on the pdf file. Click the Security tab. Under 'Group or user names', 'System' should be highlighted. Look at the panel below. There should be a tick under 'Allow' for everything except 'Special Permissions'. Then click on the username you use for your PC (underneath 'System'). The ticks should remain unchanged. If you don't see all of those ticks, click on 'Edit' to change the permissions for that file.
While that should change the permissions for that individual file, it won't change them in general though. I'm worried that you might have a corrupt user profile (so that you've been assigned inadequate permissions). You might need to creat a new user profile and then import your old settings (which is fiddly but not too difficult) but I'd hold fire on that one for the moment!

I have a Hp printer and to make it scan I had to download the Hp AiO (All In One) app onto my iPad. I use this printer with my iPad and an old laptop. You then use the app on the iPad to operate the scan function rather than the printer itself. I find trying to problem solve with Hp is a nightmare. Hope this could help.
Thanks Sycamore! That works fine. So at least I know that there's some sort of communication between the ipad and the printer's scanning function.
All I've got to do now is:-
a) find out where the scan is stored and then get it into my PC
b) persuade Mrs Mike to lend me her ipad whenever I want to scan something.

Chris, I've got the pdf User Manual back from the depths by (more or less) following your advice. I've also managed to make the other blank folder icons, in the folder to which I dragged them, become "live" and responsive.
The original HP Envy 4524 printer icon that was on the Desktop doesn't respond correctly though. When I try to open it I get a message in the HP Printer Assistant box "C:\ProgramData\HP\HP Envy 4520series \HPUDC \******:USB\UDC_Install.json". This is followed by a repeat of that message with the word "device" in place of the word "Install". (****** is the serial number of my printer).
If I click on OK to that message, I get another screen which says, "string not found".
This probably means more to you than it does to me!
For the moment, I'll stick with Sycamore's Ipad app "workaround" and hope that the Support folk at HP can come up with something a bit more satisfactory!

Sorry, I'm getting lost here! I think that contacting HP is your best bet. Interestingly though, the only web reference I can find to someone having problems with the same series of printer (and with the same error message) is from someone who could scan but not print!

Just to let you know, Buenchico and Sycamore, that everything is now as it should be with the printer / scanner - without even having to resort to contacting HP!
I repeated, for the second or third time, the uninstall / reinstall procedure and when this didn't make any apparent difference, I thought I'd try the ePrint facility. I duly opened this and somehow or other it worked! I've no idea why but I'll just accept that it does! So I can now scan either direct from the button on the printer (both in wireless and USB mode) or from the Devices and Printers screen on the PC. As already mentioned, the iPad app also enables remote printing.
The only sting in the tale is that the Start ¦ All Programs ¦ HP ¦ HP Envy 4520 series still shows "(empty)" rather than an options submenu. At the moment I don't need this so I'll stick with what I've got!
Thanks again to you both for your help, ideas and patience over the weekend.
