I am having trouble opening this page as Firefox is saying the address is unsafe and won't allow access. I am not sure if Firefox has been updated to a newer version or whether it is in fact the Gazetteer which is the problem. Can I ask someone to open the Gazetteer to see if you have the same problem. As you know I use this site to compile my own quizzes for Buxton Mountain Rescue and am hoping to make a start on my next one shortly.

Question Author
Thanks Tilly, do you run Firefox?
No, Chrome, Furry.
I think the website must have a problem. I tried several of the options and all were the same. Did you notice the red line appearing to cross out the https part of the address?

Thank you. I hope it is just a minor problem then. I will try again in a few days. It is a good site being able to enter searches using part of a place name and is invaluable to me to compile my quiz.

Yes Tilly, their address isn't showing the 's' which is what makes it 'safe'.
Thank you sadpuffin for your reply.
It's coming up as The Association of British Counties, now. Can't find a way to search anymore :(
Question Author
Yes thanks scorpio, I got as far as that but as you say no search. Gazetteer comes under the Association's license I think but was always a separate body. If we can't get the same as before, I will not be able to do my quizzes how I have been used to.
Nooooooooooo :(

I have sent internal mail to ABCounties to see if this is a temporary problem or has my fundraising quizzes come to an abrupt end.
I noticed this a couple of days ago. I went to the home page and I think there was a message saying the site was being redesigned
(sounds familiar!). Hopefully it's a short term outage only.
It will be interesting to hear any replies you get from ABCounties.
Question Author
Yes I will update as soon as I have response.
Question Author
I am still awaiting a response from ABCounties, I have located a different site that allows searching for part words of place names althoug I am not sure that it is as good but maybe all is not lost. At least I will be able to compile my next quiz and use this site as reference should there be a permanent issue with the original site and others may also benefit.

Thank you Furrypusscat, that's a good stop gap.
Question Author
Well, after a few messages to and fro this afternoon I have now got the Gazetteer back as it was so for anyone wishing to get this useful site back, here is the copy of the last email:

Dear Gillian,

It sounds like you need to clear your browser cache. See: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-clear-firefox-cache

It seems that a particular quirk of Firefox is that it does not easily forget things. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/refresh-firefox-reset-add-ons-and-settings?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=reset-firefox-easily-fix-most-problems has some instructions for ‘refreshing Firefox’, but I am not an expert on the Firefox browser!

You may also view the gazetteer at abcounties.com/gazetteer.

Regards,
Michael

I haven't tried clearing the cache, that is a task for later, but I opened the page by using abcounties.com/gazetteer.
Thank you for that. Glad you're sorted :)

They had said that the initial problem was a technical issue at their end but I am pleased it has all been resolved now. I can work on my next quiz now.
