Formula-writing software

I'm looking for a program that can be used to draw out mathematical formulae which are too complicated to write properly with normal text.  I've tried Fast Formula Painter and found it to be very good, but it appears to lack the ability to do long-division, as seen here.  Is there a similar piece of software out there that has this feature?  (Such as what the author of that page might have used.)

Try Maple. That's pretty good at the sort of thing your after.

Yes, maple is indeed very powerful. I associate it more with a tool for solving equations, less for writing them out neatly.

LaTeX is used by many for scientific report writing, and even scientific and mathematical books.

If you have Microsoft Office you already have something called Microsoft Equation Editor. You can find this in Word under Insert > Object.

however, the microsoft equation editor is the spawn of satan. apart from being hard to use (for lots of equations, maybe not the odd one), it also outputs terrible-looking equations.
