The one which is constantly recommended in the technical press, on BBC technology programmes, and here on AB, is VLC

(It's about a billion zillion squared times better than the dreaded Windows Media Player!)

VLC -that's three of us! It's free, but there are sites which try to charge, and/or stealthily slip in rubbish programmes. Get it from VLC's own site.
