Good morning all!
When I got up at 0600, my laptop displayed the following message:
Configuring Windows updates
30% complete
Do not turn off your computer

That was four and a half hours ago, and the message is still the same, and it is still 30% complete

Please can anyone help?
Thank you very much!

I did the new update last night and it took around 5 hours start to finish
Mine took about 3 hrs yesterday ..just let it do its thing
That is a long time, but I hear it is a large update, redoing Windows 10 it seems. Leave it for the rest of the day before you conclude it has frozen, give up, and reboot.
A colleague of mine had exactly the same thing this morning, so it must be something in this specific update. I'm waiting for my turn.
Just as an aside, Big Dave and Fifteensquared - usually the busiest of the crossword blogs - have been pretty quiet today. Same is true (for me) on FB & Twitter. Maybe lots of other people have given up and gone out for the day!
Yep. My turn now!
Hi poisondwarf.... What's the latest on the up-date. ?

I am inclined to believe that the up-date is tantamount to a complete reinstall of Windows 10 because the original edition had been released before fully perfect and full of imperfections which are now being corrected.

Hans.

Strange, because mine only took 5 minutes yesterday. However tonight I did receive a pop-up warning of some major revamp. Can't remember the exact wording.

Thank you all very much for your response to my dilemma.
After twelve hours without progress, I stopped the update, shut down and restarted my laptop - and everything has been fine since. I intend to have a look at updating manually in future - unless you think it inadvisable for an 80 year old Luddite to do so!
Many thanks once again!
I do it as manually as I can. Just started a download about half hour ago. Daren't do much on the PC now except surf in case it crashes again ;-)
Just out of curiosity ( being a philistine on these matters )
Why does an update like this, actually take so long in this age of fast speed internet and all that ?

What is actually happening that it cant take 15 mins ?
It is not just an "update" patch Baz. It is a complete operating system to replace the original. It also happened with w7 wxp and w8 so is not unusual. To effect this upgrade Microosoft has to check your system for capacity and security, then install the new system after finding disc space if your system is near to capacity. After that it has to transfer all your files and settings over to the new system and check that all is correct and good to go. Then the old operating system is removed and your system is restored after a reboot. It will take longer for some due to slower systems and differing broadband speeds around the Country. I did a desktop in just under 1&1/2 hours whilst on line and with other devices connected to the router but did a laptop in an hour by disconnecting all other devices from the router including phone, printer, tv, and my music centre.
Updated my PC yesterday. Expected the "creators" update, but it turned out, no. That was just stated as imminent, but had a link to try it early. Didn't bother.
These updates are a royal pain. My desktop just updates.
I don't even use it.
