Intranet is local, ie it is only connected to by a company's own network of computers, like an Internal Net, whereas the internet is world-wide

If you have a local area network (LAN), which is a network based in one place, for example, in an office, any documents etc shared on this will be shared on the intranet...whereas the big network of computers accross the world which we are using now is called the internet. It is possible to connect an intranet to the internet allowing users to access the inTERnet from their inTRAnet however most often, access the opposite way is not permitted for security reasons

Specifically an IntRAnet is an internal network (LAN) using IntERnet technologies, i.e. a plain LAN using shared folders (Windows) is not an Intranet, but one with its own internal webserver is.
