I have a message saying 'priority update' for AVG
scanner, I am useless at understanding the instructions (senility)! and need a simple explaination as to how to sort it.

I have not got that window in front of me so not sure what the buttons say, but if you get the AVG priority update window just select the button to say "Go ahead" or "Yes" or "OK" (I think it may be "Update").
Assuming you are conected to the internet AVG will then download the latest updates and install them. You do not need to do anything.
You will get a message at the end saying it is complete, and a little window with a clock that counts down from 30 seconds to 0.
You can click on this window to remove it at any time, or let it go on its own.
vehelpfulguy - Tried what you suggested, but it states new update ready (level: Priority update) from www.grisoft.cz. Tried to do this, but the answer is 'proxey server connection failed'!

This sounds like it might be an issue with how your PC is connected to the Internet, especially if you're using a proxy server or have a third-party firewall (none of which I necessarily expect you to know, so don't worry).
I was having trouble letting AVG update itself the other day too, although I wasn't getting quite the same error message. It could just be their servers being a bit dodgy, which happens sometimes.
However, you can download and install the update manually if you so wish. To do this, follow these instructions:
If it says that no update was detected, and you're sure you specified the correct location where the file is located, then try downloading one of the other files (I recommend in the order of 466KB, 5MB - but don't download the bottom one).
No problem. In truth it sounds more complicated than it actually is. I use this method to update my AVG on my other system that had no net connection. Once you've done it a few times, you'll be able to do it with your eyes closed :)
You might want to ask your son-in-law about the Internet connection settings when you can though, as updating it over the Internet is far easier for what it's worth.
Internet settings really aren't a strong point for me, else I would try to help you with those too.
What I can say is that you can check whether or not you're using a proxy connection in some respect (even if it's only for HTML through your web browser). If you open Internet Explorer, click "Tools" near the top and then "Internet Options". There are settings in there that will allow you to see your current configuration.
Are you using a broadband (cable or ADSL) net connection, or are you on 56k dial-up? Only that'll likely make a difference as to where your settings are located exactly.
As I mentioned earlier, your problem might also be the result of a firewall blocking the connection between AVG and the Internet in an attempt to protect your PC. If you have one, make sure that it's set to allow connections between AVG and the net. All firewalls are different in how you configure these options, but basically you want to add AVG to your trusted programs or exceptions list in it. I'm not sure I can be of any more help than that I'm afraid.
