XP wont to to Microsoft sites

I am having a bit of a dilemma. Laptop (P4) with XP Home (SP1) installed. AOL Broadband (2Mbit). Using IE, I type in www.microsoft.com - it gets up to 5 bars, stays there for ages, times out. It does the exact same with www.msn.com. But any other site is opened up almost immediately. I tried with the AOL Browser. It opened up the Microsoft page, then disconnected. I tried it with a second laptop with almost identical specs (Celeron) and that was the same. I installed Firefox, typed in www.msn.com - same thing again. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks in advance.
