Problem recording with a Sony DCR-TRV19E

When I switch my Camcorder to camera mode I get nothing displayed in the viewfinder or on the LCD panel. What is wrong and what can I do to remedy the problem?

I have checked the Types of trouble and how to correct trouble section of the operating instructions but the fault is not covered.
