Recording Duplicate

I have Tivo Box connected via Virgin. I have recorded a series from TV but the box has made a duplicate of the folder and put a star on it. I can't delete the copies without deleting the original recording. Anything I do to a programme in one folder is duplicated in the other. How has this happened and is there a way to get rid of the copies without affecting the folder with the originals?
