How To Connect To Router

Have just got my laptop back from repairers. Now I cannot connect it to wifi at home. Tablet and phones are all still working and connected to wifi. I took it back and they put in my router pin and wlan. He said it would automatically connect at home. It doesn't. It obviously worked on the shops wifi. How can I very carefully and slowly type in all the gump I need and more to the point where??

All my computers, whatever they are, will search for available routers and wi-fi's. So your router should come up on the list.

There will be better qualified people to answer this than me, but I would turn your router off, wait a few mins and then turn it back on again. Try again to search for your router. If its still not there, then I am not sure what else to suggest....over to the experts !

Does your router have Mac address filtering switched on, and have the repairs caused your laptop's Mac address to change?

You see I dont understand all the settings. What is Mac? It is window 10. Yes my wifi comes up but will not accept any password or router key. Am completely flumoxxed and very annoyed!!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAC_filtering is basically a method of allowing only "recognised" devices to use a wi-fi network. Did you set the router up yourself or did someone do it for you? If the latter, they may have switched MAC filtering on. If so, you have two choices: switch it off, or configure it to allow your laptop's new MAC address to have access.

Alternatively, you haven't accidentally got your Caps Lock on, have you?

Take a look at your router to see if it's got a WPS button. (All modern routers should have. It will either be labelled 'WPS' or it will have a logo like this one: https://www.nettalk.com/wp-content/themes/nettalk/images/wps_logo_small.png )

Assuming you've found that button, go to your laptop and click on the wireless icon at the bottom right of your screen. (It looks like this: https://www.sierratel.com/images/sti/wireless_dsl/W101.jpg ).

Look for the network name which your router is broadcasting. Click on it. Ensure that there's a tick next to 'Connect automatically'. Click 'Connect'.

DON'T enter any password. Instead press the WPS button on your router and hold it in for a few seconds. Your connection should then be established.

I'll try your suggestions tomorrow buenchico. Strangely enough I have a managed to connect the laptop to my mobile's WiFi hotspot, so the fault must never with the router although all other equipment is working fine on it!

Yes I have all that, I may go and try it but room is dark and I'm scared of cockroaches which may or my not be marauding!

Oh dear no wps, button, only adsl and Internet, but have connected it with the ethernet cable. Not ideal but workable. Modem is not that old either!

Try resetting your laptop's TCP/IP stack. (Don't worry - it's far easier than it sounds!):

RIGHT-click on the Start button.
Select 'Command Prompt Admin'.
Then type the following line into the box which appears:
netsh int ip reset resettcpip.txt
Hit 'Enter'.
You should then see a message telling you that you need to restart your computer for the command to take effect, so . . .
Restart your laptop and see if you can connect to your router.

Well guess what? I used laptop on an ethernet cable so at least it was working, then I tried it on WiFi tethering hotspot and it worked, left it all am on cable, just tried WiFi again and look and behold it has connected. Why? I have no idea. Thank you all so much especially buenchico
