Can anyone recommend an easy to use home printer, that doesn't eat up ink cartridges as if they were going out of fashion? I have just bought the HP Deskjet 5440 which use a ridiculous amount of ink.

If you do black and white printing as well as colour consider a laser printer.

I bought a Samsung ML1210 laser printer 2 years ago for about 40.00 (in a sale) and it is still using the ink that came with it.

These printers work more like photo copiers so use far less ink (the toner cartridge is huge anyway)

In fact I saw a Samsung ML1610 in WH Smiths today for about 60 pounds.

In fact even if you do colour AND black and white printing you could have both. You can use the laser for black and white and the other for colour.

It will save you money in the long run.

I have a canon 250i it does use up ink quickly, but the cartrages are fairly cheep, i get them online for around 2 for black and white.
If you don't want them to 'eat up cartridges' ie. you mean expensive rather than a lot of use, then stay away from HP and Lexmark because they replace the heads each time - hence the expense (and compatibles are still quite dear). You need to look at Epson and Canon who only replace the inks each time (of course a new head may be needed sometime but I've yet to experience that). Then of course you will save even more by using compatible cartridges. If 60 or 70 isn't too much to pay, then one of the newer Epson (Stylus Photo 220) or the Canon Pixma range will be excellent and even print on CDs and DVds. Otherwise there are a few in the range much cheaper than this. You might save yourself some money (and time) by buying a computer mag that is reviewing printers in a particular month.
PS. As vehelpfulguy suggests - buy a laser printer as well, it will definitely save you money when printing letters and anything with lots of text. I use a Samsung laser as well and it has been great. You might even pick one up for 49.99 on-line just now.

I have an Epson C46 and it's a great wee printer. I buy the ink on line and it costs a total of 4.20 for the black and colour cartridge. This also includes postage.
