You get what you pay for with sat-navs. Cheap ones only have UK maps, no traffic warning and no map updates. The more you pay the more comprehensive the maps (western Europe, N America etc) and you get free map updates (which can be expensive but not frequently required).
I would suggest you go to somewhere like Halfords and play with the ones on display.

Auto Express currently rates the Garmin Drive 51 LMT-S as the best satnav without live traffic updates (which add to the cost):

I have something like this, purchased around 5 years ago for about £45 – from a man in China.
No doubt this is an upgraded version.

It comes with European mapping and many options; but it does not have the facility for live traffic updates.

In reality it is a tablet, with the primary function of a Satnav.

A warning to those of you using an app to turn your (smart) phone into a satnav; it is illegal to use a mobile phone in this mode while in control of a vehicle – but it is perfectly legal to use a satnav (in exactly the same way) while in control of a vehicle.

Hymie, that’s not correct.

you can, as long as you follow some simple rules.

Firstly, invest in a holder or cradle so that you are not handling the phone when you drive.

Secondly, make sure you have put your destination in before you set off.

I think I paid £79:00. It has free life-time updates, and is very easy to use. I wouldn't be without it.

I only use my satnav when driving in unfamiliar locations, which is quite rare – but when I do, I’m often making adjustments as I drive, particularly zooming in as I get close to my destination.

Then you risk prosecution as the police could say your being distracted. Most modern sat navs and the Google Maps app on smartphones automatically zoom in when you come to junctions / changes in direction / town and cities.

The price on some SatNavs is astonishing......I can see how spending over £200 might seem OK, if you drive all over Europe, but much cheaper ones are available.

I have a Garmin - nüvi 250, which has served me well, but is 10 years old and now she (Gladys I call her) gets confused on new bypasses and roundabouts. I get the message to go online for updates, but when I do I'm told non are available.

Khandro....this has happened to me, twice !

Khandro - if your sat-nav is 10years old it will bbe almost as cheap to buy a new one as it would be to update the maps (even if you could). You will find the new ones are much quicker at finding a route, re-routing you if you go wrong, optionally have live traffic updates and will re-route you to avoid jams.

My car has the sat nav built in but I used to have a Garmin which I bought from Cash Generator (second hand but good as new) for around £35.
