Can you only use whatsapp if you have a smart phone? I only have a PC and an old fashioned pay as you go mobile flip phone, I'm not very well up with technology, but all my friends and family seem to use whatsapp now so I never find out what's going on.

I might be wrong here but whatsup is just a posh and very useful way of using text messaging, so I am guessing that if you can text, then whatsup should be ok.

But I expect that someone more clued up will be on here soon !
Barsel.....I am not up in theses things either.....but you must get Whatsapp.
You don't need a PC but you do need a smartphone.
If you download the Whatsapp on a smartphone you can phone anybody, anywhere in the world FREE as long as they have Whatsapp on their mobile too.
Wow Sqad......you seem very clued up !

(morning by the way ! )
LOL...morning mikey.....no, I am not clued up but Whatsapp is a revelation.
My relatives and myself use whatsup, to keep in touch with each other, over the continuing hospitalisation of my brother ( 5 years in February, by the way...on and off )

Its been a godsend, as it is so quick and convenient, and I now wonder how on earth I managed without it.

Barsel......this is slightly off-topic but perhaps its time to consider changing to a better Mobile ?

There are a variety on offer, and I don't want to get into a ratings war with others as to which one to use. But my iPhone has now been shown itself to be invaluable in so many ways, and it doesn't cost a fortune.

Step into the 21st century with confidence !
whatsapp allows free calls ..video..photo sending etc.. as long as the recipient has it also... but you will need a smart phone..not necessarily an Iphone there a trillions of relatively cheap phones that will do the job just as well..go to a phone store and ask what is available...
Good point by mikey Barsel........you DO need a good phone.
Barsel....within a very short amount of time, after getting your lovely, shiny new Mobile, you will be wondering how on earth you managed without one !
If you don't have a "smart" phone how are you going to run the app ?
PC use is merely connecting your PC interface to the app running on your mobile. So yes, you can only use it if you have a "smart" phone. (It does, however, run fine using WiFi.)

Thanks for all your answers. I think the consensus is, I need to get a more modern phone but, I really can't use them or even a laptop. I have tried with other peoples phones, but I just can't get the hang of them. Oh well, I've managed so far to do without. Thanks again folks.
The critical bit not mentioned is you need a smartphone but you have to be connected to the internet to use Whatsapp.
Barsel.....you are giving up far too easily !....if you can post on here, then a smart Mobile will present no insuperable problems.

In the sort of books I used to read as a boy in the 50's and 60's, someone would have said ::

"Buck up and show some spunk !"

( always thought that was a trifle rude actually )

If Sqad can do it, anyone can ( ! )
Whatsapp is only really useful if you frequently contact people overseas. If you only contact people in your own country then the free texts and minutes on your non-smart phone should suffice.

I use Skype on my pc, tablet and smartphone. I can call anyone in the world who also has Skype at no cost. Works very well on a desktop pc and the video calling is excellent
You really need to update, Barsel. As others have previously said, you will wonder why on earth you didn't before. I use it to keep in touch with everyone , we have family groups, so we all know what is going on and photos are easypeasy to take and send.
You can use Whatsapp on a PC but you need to download Bluestacks and use it via that ( you can use most apps via Bluestacks)- I do and it works a treat (big Bluestacks fan here) :)
Question Author
kvalidir are you saying I can use Whatsapp on my PC without having a smartphone? I will have a look into Bluestacks, but a smartphone is a definite no no as I really can't use them.
See if Skype will suit your needs, no smartphone required.
