hi-def tv is basically tv pictures upto 4x better than current screens can show.sky will start broadcasting in hd next year so it is not essential to have hd tv yet but if you are gonna buy a new tv then definitely get one thats hd ready ie a plasma or lcd

Images will not be "4x better", they'll only be sharper because they will have more pixels.
How many more pixels depend on which HD format is used... and there are lots of HD formats...
Most of the next-generation video game consoles will be compatible with HD tv to give a sharper image than current generation...
( Not that it will make the games any more interesting, fun, or smoother to play... )

My advice- wait for broadcasting to reach the resolution,
and also go and see a HDTV showing a HDTV film, (i saw one in local john lewis store)... poetry
