That da Vinci painting that sold for 450 million recently

The penultimate bid was 370 million .
Then it was raised (by the winning bidder) to 400 million )

My question is why did he/she raise the bid by such a big amount -30 million .
She/ he may have got it for a lot less less than the additional amount of 30 million .

You see this a lot in programmes where people are bidding for items .

It is a question that no one here will be able to answer i know .

But do you agree with my musing ?

a take out bid perhaps, 450 million with auction fees.....next one up is a Francis Bacon later in the month estimated at £45mln and then a Peter Doig, Britain's highest realised living artist at an estimate of £15 miliion - he's from asquith-minty land.
