Right Click Acting Strangely

If I right click on an icon, my drop-down menu now has become a thin grey band with a few arrows on but no writing. in short the width has shrunk. How has this happened and how can I rectify please

Thanks Buenchico, I think, (saying this tentatively), that a system restore has solved it but will read the pages you suggest as interest just in case.
