If you want a freebie you'll probably have to download any one of the three big office suites (OpenOffice, Libre Office, WPS Office Free).
There are a few alternatives available but (unless you never share documents with others) you'd need to check whether they can handle Microsoft formats. See here for details:

(NB: Although that page is only a few months old, some things are already out of date. Kingsoft Office is now renamed to WPS Office and AbiWord is now no longer available for Windows).

If you just need a good but basic word processor, you could try Ableword http:// www.abl eword.n et/
It does read and write the MS word formats (.doc and .docx), it's free and as a bonus, it will also allow you to edit PDF files.
A brief review is at https:/ /www.te chsuppo rtalert .com/co ntent/a bleword .htm-0 and there are others out there but some of them tend to concentrate on the PDF editing capabilities.

I’ve not purchased such an item from ebay (I have my own source of MS office), so cannot recommend – but at this price it must be worth a punt. I think others might be selling it cheaper if you search.
Note that the purchase is a digital download – you don’t get any CD/DVD.
