Not legally.
Microsoft give very little away and Word definitely isn't among them. (Some computers are sold with 'starter' editions of Microsoft Office, including just Word and Excel, but they're not made available for download).

If you want a freebie you'll probably have to download any one of the three big office suites (OpenOffice, Libre Office, WPS Office Free).

There are a few alternatives available but (unless you never share documents with others) you'd need to check whether they can handle Microsoft formats. See here for details:

(NB: Although that page is only a few months old, some things are already out of date. Kingsoft Office is now renamed to WPS Office and AbiWord is now no longer available for Windows).

Only if you've got more money than sense (in my opinion):

EEK! Why would word alone cost that ? Is office all done by download Chris ? Was on a disc last time..but no disc drive now
"Why would Word alone cost that?"

Because Microsoft can. Download OpenOffice for free and turn your attention to something else.
I believe the "on-line" version is free to use, might be worth you looking into;

Thank you chris....Will take a peep...thanks all xx
If you just need a good but basic word processor, you could try Ableword http://www.ableword.net/

It does read and write the MS word formats (.doc and .docx), it's free and as a bonus, it will also allow you to edit PDF files.

A brief review is at https://www.techsupportalert.com/content/ableword.htm-0 and there are others out there but some of them tend to concentrate on the PDF editing capabilities.
If you want a simple word processor and you have Windows then WordPad is available on ALL version of Windows (I believe). It comes preinstalled.

It CAN open Word documents but not all features of Word may be shown (only the more complex features)
I’ve not purchased such an item from ebay (I have my own source of MS office), so cannot recommend – but at this price it must be worth a punt. I think others might be selling it cheaper if you search.

Note that the purchase is a digital download – you don’t get any CD/DVD.
