h ii was wondering if if anyone can tell me if it is possible to phone the U.S using whatever international dialing code was necessary and then phoning one of their freephone numbers. I doubt whether this can be done but i thought i'd run it past you folks first. Thanks for any advice as usual

There seems to be some confusion about whether it's possible to get through to US 'toll free' (1-800) numbers from the UK. Some people have reported being able to get through simply by putting 00-1 in front of the number but the consensus view seems to be that, in most cases at least, it doesn't work. (You certainly can't access UK 0800 numbers from abroad).

What is definitely beyond doubt however is that, if you can get through, the call won't be free. You'll be charged at the usual international rate for calls to the USA.

Thanks for the answer, after reading it a couple of times it dawned on me that as soon as you dialed their code you probably started to incur charges
Trying to get the call receiver to pay for unexpected, and not agreed, international calls sounds very unlikely. There'd need to be a specific arrangement / allocated number at the far end, I'd have thought.
