Windows Media Player

I have Windows 10 and the current version of Windows Media Player (12.0.17134.1) - both of which I am fed up with. Not much I can do about the operating system but there is a website where you can download old versions of Media Player (the one I was familier with was version 10, I think) and I thought of trying to get back to that. Can anyone advise if that is reasonable, or if it would be incompatible with what I have, or otherwise. Advice and comments appreciated.

Dump it and use VLC player

Windows Media Player hasn't been updated since (as version 12) it was distributed with Windows 7 in 2009. The previous version (11) was issued with Windows Vista in 2007. If you really want to get hold of version 11 (and to see if it will actually run under Windows 10, which is by no means certain) look no further than the wonderful OldApps.com:

However WMP has been rubbish all along, with the technical press, BBC technology programmes and countless members of this website constantly directing people towards VLC as a far, far better media player:

That, however, assumes that you're seeking an all-in-one player (for both music and video). If you're only after a music player (with excellent facilities for organising your albums and cover art) take a look at MusicBee:

Thanks for answers - I will try VLC Player, again. I did download it some time ago but was discouraged by the effort needed to figure out how to do things on it. As my main use for the player is ripping cds for mp3 transfer and the occasional music cd, I'll also try the getmusicbee program.

Further to my previous - I meant ripping audiobook cds to mp3.
