Facebook Messenger

I sent a message to someone I’m not connected with on Facebook. When I go into messenger the message appears highlighted blue with a tiny blue tick in a white square. The help section on fb only gives status info about messages sent to your fb friends so what happens to those you send to non friends? Sorry this is longwinded :)

The symbols are exactly the same irrespective of whether you're sending to 'friends' or 'contacts':
